AltSchool graduates leave with skills, relationships, and momentum, and then lose all three to the scatter. Conversations spread across group chats. Projects vanish into feeds. The habit of staying accountable to each other fades once the program ends.

There was no shared home to track alumni work, make it easy to collaborate, or keep people connected over time. Renting community space from social platforms means living by their rules, not ours.

How do you give a growing alumni network one trusted place to exist, a living directory, a place to collaborate, and a record of their work, without adding yet another app people abandon after a week?

The core idea: a community's home should be owned, not rented. A platform meant to serve alumni for years has to survive changing needs, so I built AltBase like a real product, not a portfolio piece.

Every decision went through one question: does this make it easier to stay connected? If a feature didn't do that, it didn't ship.

I shaped the flows to keep onboarding light. Graduates arrive already knowing each other, so the platform asks little and shows its value fast. The interface stays quiet, so the alumni and their work are the thing you notice.

As the creator and the person who keeps it running, I own the whole thing: the frontend, the data model, and the daily reality of keeping a live platform healthy.

The hardest work has been the ongoing kind, reshaping the database and building real-time features so the platform grows smoothly with the network, without breaking what already works.

Live products punish assumptions. Database changes had to happen while people were using the app. Real-time features had to fail gracefully. Feedback often went against my roadmap, and listening to it mattered more than defending the plan.

Live, maintained, and still growing based on direct feedback from the alumni community. AltBase is a long-term commitment, not a launch.

Shipping version one is the starting line. Real product engineering is being willing to own a system through its bugs, rewrites, and hard calls long after the launch buzz fades.
